Transporting a Gun in South Carolina

Where can you store your gun in your vehicle while traveling in South Carolina?

Hi, my name is Dale Savage and I’m a criminal defense attorney here in Charleston, South Carolina and today I’m going to discuss where you should carry your firearm in your vehicle to avoid criminal charges and losing your rights to possess a firearm.

Do You Have a Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP)?

When carrying a firearm in your vehicle in South Carolina it depends if you are have a CWP issued by the state of SC or not.

If you do not have a CWP or you have a CWP issued from another state, there are four areas in your vehicle to lawfully transport you gun.

No CWP

  1. one in a glove box that is closed
  2. in a closed center console;
  3. In a closed trunk;
  4. or in a closed container that is fastened securely.

If you have your gun stored in one of these four locations, then you do not need a CWP and you are not in violation of the statute.

What this means is that you can’t transport your gun in a motor vehicle in a book bag, a purse, a handbag, or in the open area of the door compartment.

CWP

How does this change if you do have a CWP issued from the South Carolina?

In addition to the four places just mentioned a person with a valid SC CWP can also carry their firearm:

  1. Under your seat.
  2. In between your seat and the center console; or
  3. On your person.
